Barcelona ask media respect following Neymar Sr incident
Neymar’s father turned on the media spectacularly for trying to get images of his son’s celebrated birthday party in Barcelona.
Several camera crews were waiting with anticipation near the entrance to the restaurant looking to congratulate Neymar on his birthday.
Neymar Sr appeared out of the door and squared up to reporters:
“Isn’t Neymar allowed to enjoy himself now and again?” he pleaded. “You don’t want to congratulate my son, if you want to congratulate my son, you’d leave him alone and let him be happy.”
After Neymar’s father responded rather angrily to reporters’ consistent questioning earlier this week, Barcelona have issued a formal statement demanding respect for those who are associated with the club
Neymar is believed to have been celebrating intensely his 24th birthday at a nightclub this Friday – two days before Barcelona faced Levante in La Liga – and clear footage emerged of his father Neymar Sr taking an exception to the media presence.
Barca called for proper respect from the press in a statement on Saturday.
“FC Barcelona demands respect for the people who are part of the institution when they decline to comment or answer questions, even more so in their leisure time,” it read.
“The right to information can not be at odds with the obligation to respect the freedom of individuals. The club will take measures to protect these basic rights.”
Luis Enrique’s squad had trained on Saturday ahead of their La Liga clash with Levante and traveled south later that very day.
In his pre-match news conference, the Barca coach was quite vocal when said of the club’s rules regarding players partying: “I’m not going to make our rules public knowledge. What’s more, they’re of no interest to you.”
Both Neymar and his father are recently facing accusations of serious tax evasion and forgery in Brazil while the player had appeared in a Spanish court on Tuesday in order to give testimony in a separate and yet relevant case relating to his transfer to Barca back three years ago.
Neymar, Neymar Sr and Barcelona have all absolutely denied wrongdoing across both cases.
