Barcelona conceded a late goal in an otherwise smooth match as they beat Athletic Bilbao 2-1 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey Barcelona vs Bilbao quarter-final taking place at San Mames.
Munir El Haddadi put Barca importantly ahead after 18 minutes and Neymar then doubled the advantage shortly afterwards after goalkeeper Iago Herrerin made quite a mess of a clearance.
Athletic struggled hard and pushed for a goal in the second half and were ultimately rewarded late on as Aritz Aduriz pulled off one after a misplaced pass from Dani Alves came in their rescue, in the Barcelona vs Bilbao match.
The return leg will take place at the Camp Nou happening on next Wednesday, interestingly when Atletico Madrid and Celta Vigo will also face each other in the Spanish capital having drawn their first leg 0-0.
Barcelona had defeated Athletic 6-0 in La Liga at the weekend but yesterday they were without the presence of suspended Luis Suarez and also the injured Lionel Messi, who picked up a notable knock in the Barcelona vs Bilbao league match.
Nevertheless, they took the lead just after 18 minutes when Ivan Rakitic put in a stunning cross from the right wing for Munir to simply turn it home.
It soon got worse for Athletic Bilbao as Herrerin came sliding out to handle a pass and missed the ball spectacularly, allowing Neymar merely to tap into the empty net, taking the lead to 2-0.
The six-minute double took the belief out of Athletic, who had started rather brightly, and Andres Iniesta missed a chance for a definite third when he miscued a shot just inside the penalty box.
Athletic upped the ante in the terminal 10 minutes and, after Marc-Andre ter Stegen suffered from Sabin Merino’s header, the hosts got the much appreciated breakthrough.
Athletic even went seriously close to equalising as Aduriz’s shot had deflected goalwards, but Ter Stegen made a brilliant save to ensure Barca maintained a lead.
