Barcelona vs Roma : best moments from the picture gallery
Lionel Messi scored a double on his return to the Barcelona as the European champions reached a crushing 6-1 victory over Roma, securing the top spot in Group E.
After making his return from the injury for two months, Messi started as skipper in the Barcelona vs Roma match, with Andres Iniesta being on the bench, and could have pulled off a hat-trick within the very first 10 minutes.
The Argentina star had one shot defended by Wojciech Szczesny, had another effort rejected for offside and then shot just slightly wide after receiving a brilliant through ball from Busquets.
Barca went in front when Dani Alves was occupied down the right to receive Neymar’s excellent pass and passed it to Suarez, who kept the ball into an empty net at the far post.
It was two for Barca merely three minutes later. Messi exchanged two cunning passes with Neymar, Suarez’s chip sent the skipper through and he chipped the ball over Szczesny to cap a fantastic move involving the front three.
Barca kept possession for the remaining of the first half and when Neymar’s cross was sent out by Seydou Keita, Suarez unleashed a dangerous volley into the far corner which saw Thomas Vermaelen applauding.
On 56 minutes, Neymar and Suarez combined to pass for Messi and he squared for Pique – who was up from a corner – to tap the ball home home before the defender was substituted.
The fifth came just three minutes later. Neymar found Suarez from the left flank and the Uruguayan’s shot was steered towards goal by Messi. Szczesny did pretty well to save, but the returning star ensured the rebound.
Neymar only had himself to blame for not being able to convert on 77 minutes after gaining a penalty himself but had his poorly struck spot-kick saved by Szczesny. Fortunately, Adriano was prompt to slam the rebound into the roof of the net.
