FC Barcelona v RCD Espanyol : full highlights
Lionel Messi scored two splendid goals in the first half and also had two assists in the second as FC Barcelona thrashed town rivals RCD Espanyol 4–1 on Wednesday night match at Camp Nou in the first leg of the Copa del Rey last 16 tie.
Espanyol got on the board at first, going up 1–0 at the nine-minute mark as Felipe Caicedo slotted home after Dani Alves ensured a pass in Espanyol area and Marco Asensio carried it all the way into the Barça area. Asensio split the Barça defence and passed it to Caicedo, who masterfully spun around the defender Javier Mascherano before pulling the trigger finally.
Four minutes later, in the 13th, Messi drew FCB after conjuring a beautifully threaded pass from Andrés Iniesta and then shooting from right around the penalty spot, effortlessly beating Espanyol Goalkeeper Pau López.
Messi’s fabulous second goal came in the 44th minute when he blasted a free kick from shy of just 30 meters that clanged off the underside of the crossbar, ricocheting straight down, bouncing hard off the solid ground just inside the goal line and then back up into the top of the netting.
FC Barcelona made it 3–1 in the beginning of the second when Piqué sneaked behind the Espanyol defence to fire a perfectly timed assist from Lionel Messi. Messi had broken away from the defense line to receive a pass from Iniesta before dispatching a low cross through the goalmouth, with the sneaky Piqué arriving just in time.
Neymar made it to a 4–1 a minute from time with a splendid one-time shot after a textbook wall pass from the leg of Messi, his second assist in the night.
The victory implies that FC Barcelona have now won 11 of their final 12 games in the Copa del Rey.
