Luis Suarez’s hat-trick helped Barcelona maintain their dominant La Liga record against the visitor Athletic Bilbao with a crushing 6-0 win over the 10-man Basque squad at Camp Nou last Sunday.
Goalkeeper Gorka Iraizoz was shown a red after just four minutes for unethically bringing down Suarez and, after Lionel Messi comfortably drilled home the resulting penalty, Barca’s 12th victory in 12 against the Basque team never looked in any doubt.
Neymar added a second goal before setting up Suarez for a third one just after half-time, and some spellbinding effort from the Brazilian handed Ivan Rakitic an absolutely unmissable chance to take it to 4-0 just past the hour mark into the game.
Athletic coach Ernesto Valverde made few changes in the second half as he planned on resting players for the Copa del Rey encounter with Barca this week, while Luis Enrique’s squad moved back to within just two points of Liga leaders Atletico Madrid, albeit having played one game less than them.
Messi was replaced at the interval but Neymar wasted little time in turning the provider for number three, sliding the ball through gracefully to Suarez, who beat the offside trap smartly before slotting beneath Herrerin from an impressive 12 yards.
Moments after Eraso chipped over the bar from a close range on a rare break for Athletic, but Neymar’s spectacular run took him perfectly into the area before he pulled back skillfully for Rakitic to slot home right through the legs of Herrerin.
Suarez made it to five as he chested down substitute Ardan Turan’s pass into the box before putting in a low finish from close range.
Neymar fizzed a free-kick just slightly over the bar with time rather running out and Barca then got their sixth as Suarez head home Sergio Busquets’ fabulous cross from the right to seal an emphatic victory in the 82nd minute, the Uruguayan scoring his 29th goal from 29 appearances in all sorts of competitions this season.
