Messi, Ronaldo and Neymar in UEFA Team of the Year
Barcelona and Real Madrid chiefly dominate the UEFA Team of the Year for 2015, but interestingly there are no Premier League players in the announced XI.
Barcelona forwards Lionel Messi, Neymar and Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo were named in European football’s prestigious governing body UEFA’s 2015 Team of the Year, announced here this Friday.
UEFA revealed their initial line-up as voted for by the users of their official website.
A total of five Barcelona men were in the team, including skipper Messi himself, striker Neymar, veteran defenders Dani Alves, Gerard Piqué and also midfielder Andrés Iniesta.
Barcelona’s arch-rivals Real Madrid too had three players featuring in the starting line-up. These were defender Sergio Ramos, also midfielder James Rodríguez and forward Ronaldo.
German football giants Bayern Munich also had two players — superstar goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and defender David Alaba.
French international midfielder Paul Pogba of Juventus filled the final spot.
Messi was dominantly picked by 70 percent of the website users while Alexis Sánchez led the Twitter tally despite missing out on the overall XI ultimately.
Neymar, Pogba and Rodríguez carried the all-time number of the selected players to 74.
Ronaldo was the very first to 10 selections and uniquely has made appearence in more than one position: midfield (2004, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010) and thenup front (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015).
Ronaldo is now involved for the ninth year in a row and he also features alongside Lionel Messi for the seventh time this year.
Iniesta equalled Xavi Hernández and Ronaldo’s previous record of five midfield selections.
Pogba now became the third 22-year-old to pull off their debut appearance after that of Cristian Chivu (2002) and Gareth Bale (2011).
Only Cesc Fàbregas (he was 19 in 2006) and 21-year-olds Cristiano Ronaldo (in 2004), Lionel Messi (in 2008) and David Alaba (in 2013) have been younger when they were first picked.
Dani Alves was the very first Brazilian to make it to four selections; Lionel Messi is the only South American with more than that.
