Neymar hails Messi as he won the 5th Ballon d’Or
Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d’Or award tonight for an unprecedented fifth time.
The Barcelona forward reclaimed the greatest individual accolade in world football at an extremely lavish ceremony in Zurich on Monday, beating his arch-rival, Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo, the three-time proud winner he has been runner-up behind consistently for the last two years.
He also finished ahead of his fellow Barça striker Neymar after a calendar year in which the outstanding Catalan outfit claimed five titles adding to the glory.
Argentina international Messi, who scored 48 goals to boast for his club in 2015, said after being presented the prestigious award : “It is a very special moment for me to be back here on this stage, winning again another Ballon d’Or after being there in the audience watching Cristiano win.”
The popular Barcelona superstar enjoyed an absolutely incredible year. His previous victory came between 2009 and 2012 with the latest triumph now indicating his return to the top of the world game once more.
Former Ballon d’Or winner, Kaka, who himself collected the award in 2007, was onstage to present the award for the decided 2015 Ballon d’Or to one of Ronaldo, Neymar or Messi, the Argentinian claiming it finally.
We get a final montage of the Big Three, soundtracked beautifully by dramatic strings and also the sound of mumbling from Nesbitt and Abdo, whose mics surprisingly have not been turned down sufficiently enough.
Prior to the ceremony in Zurich, Messi admitted that he would swap his Ballon d’Or successes gladly for just one World Cup after the heartbreaking loss of the 2014 final to Germany.
“A lot of time has passed since 2009. I’ve grown and learned a few things,” he said.
