Neymar – the wonderkid from Brazil
Everyone knows Neymar was promising enough to become a worldwide phenomenon even when his exploits as a teenager gained global attention when he was at Santos in Brazil. Little did people know that he was already a success when he was probably yet to hit puberty.
In 2006, Romario and Robinho had arranged for a charity match in Brazil. And the game witnessed the likes of Santos stars and some upcoming prospects. Neymar was only 14 years old back then, but the wonderkid was a player who had been invited to play with the team rightfully called Romario Friends.
Neymar Jr. was seen performing various impressive skills , toying with opponents and linking up with midfielders before participating in the attack. One such example was when he sent in an inch-perfect cross that somehow was blocked by the goalkeeper on goal.
But the way he synced with Romario was almost bordering on a telepathic understanding. Receiving the ball inside the box on an opportune counter-attack, the wonderkid first faked a move to his right to dumbfound both the defender and the goalkeeper. With prompt feet, he shuffled the ball to his left to lay the opponents flat-footed and then went on to roll the ball into the empty net.
The Brazilian would later proceed to play for Santos’ youth teams, but at even at the age 14 he was given the opportunity to play at Real Madrid, not unlike his idols Ronaldo and Robinho who happened to be at the La Liga club then.
“I have always dreamed of playing there,” Neymar had exclaimed, according to the New York Times. Although, Neymar Sr. had ideas of his own and did not find it suitable for his son to move to Europe without a Brazilian nuturing.
“We’re from a humble family, and in a humble family there is always the question of cultural values,” Neymar Sr. explained. “We thought he had to grow up in Brazil. That was the first serious choice we had to make.”
