Neymar’s father insists Barcelona contract extension yet to happen
Neymar’s father insists that his superstar son is yet to sign a contract extension with his current club Barcelona, saying that discussions about a new deal will not initiate until May.
ESPN Brasil reported this Thursday that the superstar attacker, aged 24, signed a new five-year agreement with his Catalan club during December’s Club World Cup tournament in Japan, but the announcement has been deliberately delayed due to their ongoing and publicized legal issues in both Spain and also Brazil.
However the Brazil captain Neymar’s father and agent has said in AS that discussions about extending his current contract had really not yet begun — in part because of how engaged he had been defending himself against charges associated with the controversial transfer from Santos to Barcelona in 2013.
“We are relaxed with all that we are doing at Barcelona and I believe the club are too. We will speak with [Barca president Josep Maria] Bartomeu in May and come up with a path for Neymar and Barca to take together.”
Other clubs belonging from all around Europe have made tempting offers for Neymar — whose release clause is €190 million — Neymar’s father said, while exclaiming that such approaches for Barca’s big name attackers were rather common and not such a massive deal.
“Barcelona received a proposal last year and they rejected it,” he said. “These offers are returning now and Barca are prepared to reject them. But these offers are coming not just for Neymar, also for [Luis] Suarez and [Lionel] Messi…”
Real Madrid had not however made any contact with either player or club, Neymar’s father remarked.
“[Madrid] have not contacted us,” he said. “And the club has not spoken with them either. This is speculation, we have been living with this since Neymar was 16. Now we have more experience and we must wait until May or June.”
“Neymar is very happy at Barcelona, the fans should be relaxed.”
